Plywood, Paint, Hinges, Straps
Yuliang Kang studio
After graduating from RCA, I went back to school and continued to work as a guest lecturer for a while, otherwise I was pitching for jobs. I was bored and couldn't resist the urge to make something. Despite having sold all my tools, I sneaked back into the workshop and started making things with the help of my friend's slots.
This prototype began as a form of resistance, or stubbornness. I was tired of moving, and my favourite objects became a burden in such a vague and unpredictable state. I wanted to produce my everyday life in the simplest way possible in this situation, boldly embracing ambiguity and responding to change with proactive flexibility.
The design is inspired by the yellow warning sign, and I am fascinated by its quality of "temporary occupation". The identity, image, character and ownership of the space changes with the combination of the two wooden panels. The /\/ CHAIR attempts to continue this by allowing the boards to flow freely through the multiple identities of table, backpack and chair through different angles of closure and straps.
